Laila and Daisy

My friend Stephanie Sponsel hired me to shoot her two dogs Laila and Daisy for her Christmas card. I originally met Stephanie in a Letterpress class and besides being fellow Aquarians we both love paper. She has become an amazing invitation specialist and I can't wait to see how she integrates three images from the shoot into her Christmas card. Above are my favorites.

Ashley & Scott's Engagement Session

I shot Ashley and Scott's engagement photos recently in Malibu. Scott is an F16 pilot in the Air Force stationed in Arizona and was in town for the weekend. I can't wait to shoot their wedding next May at the Fenyes Estate Garden at the Pasadena History Museum.

Linda and Rebel

Linda Sanoff decided for her husband Gerry's birthday she would surprise him with a photo of her and their dog Rebel. Gerry describes Rebel as "pure goodness" and I think it's an appropriate description. Gerry and Linda have been together since college and I swear one of the best things that have ever happened to them is Rebel coming into their lives.

A Star-Studded Cartier Event

The second event for Cartier took place first on their first floor and then on the rooftop of the building. The most amazing tent was constructed and designed by Rrivre Works with catering by Along Came Mary. A special thanks to florist Eric Buterbaugh, the host for the evening (along with Cartier's North America CEO Frederic De Napp), who recommended me to Cartier.

It was a star-studded evening and the emerald and diamond necklace you see is the real thing custom designed by Cartier and given to her as a gift by her husband (who was not in attendance).

House of Cartier

I had the honor of shooting two events recently for Cartier in Beverly Hills. The first one was to celebrate the Cartier International High Jewelry Collection. The jewelry was absolutely spectacular and I truly was surrounded by millions and millions of dollars in jewels. The event also showed designer Michon Schur's designs very capably worn by models.

Sanjeet and Tommy's Halloween Party

When I left the Villa Bellefontaine after photographing Juan and Kim's wedding I knew I would probably return. Well it happened sooner than I thought. Sanjeet and Tommy have an annual Halloween party at their beautiful estate and I was asked to shoot it for them. It was a great party that included 3 Britney's, 3 Clark Kents and 2 K-Feds. A special thanks to my team who made the event go so smoothly -- Laurie Bailey, Deborah Obad and Scott Musgrove. Like an idiot I forgot to get a photo of them that night.

Sarah and Ken's Wedding

When I was a talent agent Sarah Schroeder was my assistant. She was the best assistant I ever had and I was so honored when she asked me to shoot her wedding.

The ceremony and reception took place at Duke's Restaurant in Malibu and it was such a fun event to attend and to photograph. My old associate Kevin Turner and I are so proud of her and all of her accomplishments. She is currently the Director of Alumni Relations and Development, West Coast for her alma mater Columbia College Chicago. Ken also graduated from Columbia College Chicago but they actually did not meet and start dating until they both moved out to Los Angeles almost six years ago.

The only photos I have back from the lab are the creative ones. These images were shot with infrared film and the last two were shot with a toy camera called the Holga and some quasi-infrared film from Rollei. Thank goodness for Rollei since Ilford has stopped producing their version of this film (Ilford SFX 200, which is rumored to return to the film market).

The light leaks on the last image are part of the fun and creativity you can have with a Holga.

Sarah is being interviewed today by a online radio program called "Your Dream Wedding" on Big Media USA

As a side note, I have been waiting for the Pixtivity program to come out for about a year and it was finally released. The above "Photo Wall" as they call it was created by this program and I absolutely love all of the different things it can do. Click your mouse over any of the images from the wall to get the full image. I will continue to be used by me on this blog when sharing photographs from various events with you.

My First Newsletter

I just created my first newsletter and I am really proud at how it turned out. I sent it out to 250 people and I'm already getting an incredible response to it. I hope to able to create a new one every couple of months (especially after the holiday season).

Boston University

Boston University's Today magazine (their online magazine) hired me to shoot their Semester in LA Students for a week. The students mostly live in Park La Brea and have internships at various entertainment companies around Los Angeles. We visited students at Lion's Gate, CBS and Raleigh Studios. It was a week long feature in BU's magazine and my photos appeared in four of the articles (esp. in the slideshows at the end of each article).

The photo above was when the acting students in the Semester in LA program found out they were all getting featured roles this season on SCRUBS. The reaction when they found out was priceless.

The Serpa Family

Fiona and I have known each other since we were four years old. We grew up three doors down from each other. She now lives in Forest Hills, New York and every time I see her (either in NY or when she comes back to Santa Monica) I shoot her kids Shane and Aidan(and sometimes her and her husband Perry.

Every time I walk into her house there are photos that I've taken framed in every room. Always makes a photographer feel good.

Juan and Kim at the Villa Bellefontaine

Before I shoot any wedding if I am not familiar with the wedding site I scout it a couple of days before the big day.

Juan and Kim's wedding took place at a friend's 5-acre estate in Duarte (a gated community called Bradbury Estates). The Villa Bellefontaine Estate was a wedding photographer's dream and the minute I drove up I knew I had to rent a Hasselblad X-Pan camera for the big day. This incredible panoramic camera was a great addition to my repertoire as the three panoramic photographs below attest.

I somehow can't get the images any larger on my blog. However, if you click on the images you can a larger view of them. The square image is from my ever reliable vintage Diana camera.

Juan and Kim were a lovely bride and groom and it was a really wonderful wedding. Kim looked like a princess in a castle with Juan as her prince.

Family Portraits in NYC

This is a test about space

this another test about space

Heroes Among Us

My best friend growing up was Jana Weintraub. Her father, Richard, was recently honored by University Synagogoe of Brentwood, CA in their first annual award "The Heroes Among Us". Richard has been the synagogue's Religious Confirmation teacher there(volunteering one night a week for more than 30 years) and it is a richly deserved honor. Many of his former students were there to help congratulate him and to share the impact he had on their teenage life.

I was privileged to attend the event with Jana, her brother Larry and his wife Denise and Richard's wife Nina, among others. Jana, her husband David and their daughter Jessie all came out from NYC for the big event.

Paloma the Pug

I was hired to shoot Paloma recently. She was the most adorable pug puppy and quite a funny little character too.

I just loved how these photos turned out using the dr5 process I love so much.

Polaroids from My Childhood

(From left to right) Me, Leanne, Christie and Marie in Christie's Arms
Leanne, Christie and Me in Front of our House circa 1976

My distant cousin Dixie Davidson Furlong came to Los Angeles recently and she had just come back from visiting her family home in Bladensburg, Ohio (pop. 200, 50 miles NE of Columbus). It's the town where my paternal grandmother was born and raised. She surprised me with these images which I'd never seen before. They were taken by her with a Polaroid Land Camera probably around 1976 when she lived with us for a year. It brought back some great memories including how cute and adorable my baby sister, Marie, was.

My parents were avid gardeners and if you look closely at the second photo you can see hibiscus, a lemon tree, marigolds, iceland poppies, pansies and we always grew a batch of strawberries in our front yard. I recently visited my sister Leanne up in Oakland and she literally had almost all of these things growing in her own backyard. It was like going back in time.

Gene and Jill's Wedding

The Diana Image

Gene and Jill's wedding was just lovely. The ceremony took place at St. Matthew's Church in Long Beach and the reception was held at a little park in Lakewood called the Monte Verde Park.

Jill's daughter Emma was very much a part of the day and Gene and Jill both so enjoyed themselves and it really shows in the photos.

Julia Dean Exhibit

Julia Dean has such wonderful exhibits and I was honored that one of my photographs was accepted into their Alternative Photography Exhibit. I went to the exhibit opening night and I was incredibly impressed with the quality of work. Every year it seems to get better and better.

Here is the photograph. It was shot at Pacific Park at the Santa Monica Pier right before it closed for the day. If you want to learn about the camera used to achieve this photo go to this previous blog entry

Russell Adams at Schulman Photo Lab does a wonderful job printing all of my custom black and white prints.

The Perez Family

One of my brides, Genevieve Cortez, recommended me to the Perez Family for a family photo shoot. Diana is about 8 months pregnant now and glowing. Their son Adam was such a dream that day. It took no time at all for him to cooperate and be adorable. The beach was overcast and I love that look with black and white film.

How I love my Diana Camera

I've known about Diana cameras for a long time but did not own one until recently. While I have loved other photographers work with this camera I now love my own work with this camera.

This is one is of Jennifer and Cory at the barn at Orcutt Ranch.

Jennifer & Cory

The day had finally arrived and Jennifer and Cory were getting married. They were married at a little gem of a location the Orcutt Ranch which has a wonderful history itself. The weather was perfect (not too hot especially for the valley!) and Jennifer and Cory really seemed to enjoy themselves.
