Miss Elizabeth Taylor

ElizabethTaylor

Wednesday was a very sad day for me and for the world. The divine Miss Elizabeth Taylor passed away. There will never be anyone like her. Ever. From her beauty, to her determination, to her humanity.

Elizabeth Taylor once said:

My personal philosophy of beauty is to always believe something wonderful is about to happen.

Ironically I watched the film GIANT for the first time because of James Dean, not Elizabeth Taylor. The film isn’t a perfect film but you cannot deny it’s an epic film. A couple of years ago A&I had an exhibition of Frank Worth’s images shot during the filming of GIANT and an accompanying book of these images entitled AMERICANA. I absolutely treasure this book.

In the beginning of the book there is a two page spread of contact sheets. Oh how I love contact sheets. They tell you so much. The eye of the photographer, how they tell a story, the film they used and in this case one of the cameras Mr. Worth was using that day, a Rolleiflex, of course.

Frank Worth wrote:

Jean-Luc Godard once famously said that cinema is truth twenty-four frames per second, but George Stevens’ Giant is more than this, it’s myth twenty-four frames per second, over three and half hours of playing time. From the first frame to the last, this is fact is simply undeniable; Giant is American myth it its grandest, most operatic, and purest sense of the words.

Thank you Miss Taylor and thank you Mr. Worth.

An Old-Fashioned Girl at Heart

I guess you can tell from this blog entry that I’m an old-fashioned girl. I love classic linen bookcloth wedding albums and Polaroid film (which I still have in a limited supply of course).

I created these three albums for the A Soolip Wedding event a couple of weeks ago. I’m proud to add these albums to my repertoire of albums to show to brides to be.

Check out Mark & Jennifer’s beautiful Catalina wedding album.

As promised, here is what my booth looked like at A Soolip Wedding on Sunday afternoon.

For this show I premiered new proof boxes and new press printed books in beautiful linen bookcloth, plus a sweet little accordion book.  Happy to say that I already had all the props for my table.  All those scavengers hunts at local flea markets and antique stores across the country has paid off.

Thank you Kara Frans and Jen O’Sullivan for these images.

I am honored to be once again in the Rayko Plastic Camera Show in San Francisco.  The opening is this evening and the show is open through April 30.

My image “Mysterious Hollywood” was shot with a Holga with a Polaroid back and Polaroid 672 film.

It’s always fun when two dear friends are also in the show — Aline Smithson and Noelle Swan Gilbert.

Wish I could be there tonight.

Ring

I am proud to announce that April Rocha Photography has been chosen to be the official photographer for the Westfield Topanga and Southbay Galleria Ben Bridge stores.

So what does this mean?

Any Ben Bridge customer that purchases an engagement ring at one of these stores will be receiving a free engagement session as part of their purchase at this wonderful jewelry store.

Engagement sessions are such a great way for a wedding photographer to get to know a bride and groom better.

I have an extensive list of engagement session location ideas which you can peruse or you can decide on where you want the shoot to take place.

These are two of my favorite Ben Bridge engagement rings – Ben Bridge Item Number 10495372 and Item Number 10858512.

The Last Kodachrome Show at the Rayko Photo Center

Kodachrome.Capture2

Rayko.Print.blog

I am pleased to announce my participation in THE LAST KODACHROME show at the Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco, California.

 From Rayko’s website:

In 1935 KODACHROME was released as a 6mm home movie film, then for 35mm cameras in 1936, to huge success. In the summer of 2009, Kodak announced that Kodachrome was being “retired, concluding its 74-year run as a photography icon,” with the final rolls hitting retailers shelves in early September of that year. December 2010 is the last month that Kodachrome will ever be processed, so in a juried exhibition, RayKo Photo Center celebrates the life of Kodachrome, considered by many the greatest color film ever made, the subject of popular song, and the only film to have a park named after it (Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah). It’s the end of an era…come pay tribute to this beautiful film and the powerful images made with it.

My image was shot on Kodachrome film at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, California last summer. The show opened last week and runs through January 21, 2011.
