Minted.com, an online paper goods store, recently asked me to be one of their featured photographers on their website.  The Recommended Photographers page went live recently and I was flattered to see that they only have five photographers on this listing.  Wow.

The website page states the following:

Minted is proud to work with a national network of esteemed portrait photographers.  The carefully selected photographers listed below have demonstrated incredible skill, dedication and passion toward their work.  If you are searching for a professional photographer to capture lasting memories, we invite you to consider any of our partners below.

Thank you Minted.com!

5th Annual Pico Festival

Pico.Capture

PicoArts1

I am pleased to announce that I will have two framed prints for sale at the 5th Annual Pico Festival, being held Saturday, October 16 from 11am-4pm at Virginia Park.

My pieces will be showcased at the Virginia Avenue Park Art Pavilions and some of the proceeds of the any art sales will go to “Project Lemon-Aid”, to raise funds for the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation fund, “For the Arts,” an endowment that provides arts education for students in the Santa Monica-Malibu School District, of which I’m a graduate of myself.

Photography, Music and Theatre all played important roles in my education at SMMUSD.

LA Printer’s Fair was a Success

The LA Printers Fair at the International Printing Museum in Carson on Saturday was a huge success. Prepping for the show was a lot of work for me but the turnout and compliments I got during the show made it all worth it.

I styled my booth with a lot of flea market items I have collected over the years. Additional items came from a couple of Etsy shops:

ThisandThat – my adorable receipt book
Wudls – my amazing handmade wooden displays

And Nashville Wraps for floral tissue paper and shopping bags.

I look forward to next year show on October 1, 2011.

Ace Hotel and Swim Club April Rocha Happenings Kodachrome Why I Love Film

I’m Featured on the Ace Hotel & Swim Club’s Blog Today

AceHotel.Capture

I huge thank you to the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs for featuring one of my images on their blog today.  I especially like that they wrote this entry because it pays tribute to Kodachrome film.  The entry is below:

“We bow our heads in reverence to Kodachrome film’s 74 years as a photography icon. Only one remaining lab in the world still processes Kodachrome, and they will run their last prints this December. April Rocha, a devotee of Kodachrome and other endangered and nearly-extinct forms of photography, sent this shot to us and delivered the sad news. Maybe you remember photographer Steve McCurry, whose portrait of Sharbat Gula, or the “Afghan Girl” graced the cover of a 1984 National Geographic. Steve requested that Kodak allow him to shoot the last roll of 36 frames it would manufacture, and vowed to document the entire life of the roll. “It’s definitely the end of an era,” he said. “It has such a wonderful color palette … a poetic look, not particularly garish or cartoonish, but wonderful, true colors.”

If you have any Kodachrome shots you'd like to share with us, send them our way and we we'll post them on the blog. If you haven't processed them yet, better send them to Dwayne&amp'ss posthaste.
Kodachrome, we're not worthy. Here's to a more patient, flawed, passionate and saturated age.

Inspiration Book – Kids

Yesterday I wrote about my Portraits Inspiration Book. I also have a Kids Inspiration Book (again made with an 11×14 sketch book and art and drafting dots). I have found, over the years, so many adorable photos of kids that the inspiring images deserved their own book.

The images are from a J. Crew Catalog (with vintage Steinbeck paperbacks, one of my Dad’s favorite authors), the now defunct CHILD magazine and well known portrait photographer Mary Ellen Mark shooting children with Polaroid P/N film.

Inspiration Book – Portraits

Anyone who knows me well knows I’m a magazine junkie. I have been that way since high school.

When I became a professional photographer I started to look at photographs in magazines and catalogs in a different way. So if I find an image that I really like and feel it could inspire a shoot in the future I rip it out. Over the last year I have taken many of those ripped pages and created an inspiration book using an 11×14 sketch book and art and drafting dots (in case I ever need to take the images out of the book). I have one book for Portraits and another book for Kids.

The three pages from the inspiration book are from Entertainment Weekly, a Neiman Marcus catalog and a photo shoot at Disneyland I found in C Magazine.

Family Photos Galore

L02_L

I mentioned in a couple of recent blog entries that my family had a photo shoot in 2002 shooting with a Contax 645 camera. So far I have shown you the image of my Aunt Francie and me.

On the same contact sheet were wonderful photos of my Aunt with each of her nieces.

My sister Leanne – top two images
under her is my sister Christie (left) and my sister Marie (right)
and under those two is a photo with my Aunt Francie with my mother, Laurie and my Aunt D’Ann.

I am so grateful to have these images and will treasure them always.
